Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' shipyard in Nagasaki held a launching ceremony for the new-generation Project 30FFM frigate Yahagi, the fifth ship in the series being built for Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force, Telegramm channel Dambiev reported.

It is noted that the frigate is named after the World War II light cruiser of the same name. The frigates 30FFM will replace Asahi class destroyers (it is planned to build 8 units) and will be able to conduct mine operations.

The frigate has a displacement of about 3,900 tons, is 130 m long and 16 m wide, with a combined gas turbine/diesel propulsion system. The ship is armed with 127 mm caliber Mk 45 artillery and equipped with SeaRAM self-defense system. It has a hangar for a helicopter, torpedo tubes and launchers for dipole deflectors - one of the means of radio-electronic suppression, a type of passive decoy to counteract radar guidance systems.
