Iran considers the security of Armenia and the entire region as its own security, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on Friday at the opening of the consulate in Kapan city of Armenia's Syunik province.

The Iranian Foreign Minister expressed confidence that the employees of the Iranian Consulate General in Kapan will enjoy the support of the Governments of Armenia and Iran, as well as the support of the regional and city authorities and the good will of the local population. He also recalled the Iranian government's readiness to open an Armenian general consulate in Tabriz on the principles of reciprocity.

According to the minister, the decision to open a general consulate in Kapan shows the importance with which the government and people of Iran accord to the two peoples' millennial relations.

Iran's policy, Abdollahian noted, is to respect territorial integrity and internationally recognized borders.

He said Iranian authorities will work to develop trade and economic ties between the two countries with Iranian embassy and consulate officials in Kapan.

"The Syunik province is one of the most important sections of the North-South corridor. Armenia, on the other hand, is considered by Iran as one of the most important transit countries. We will do our best to ensure that transit, cargo and passenger transportation develops along this very route," stressed the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
