Russian President Vladimir Putin said they have proposed Armenia give five districts, but the Armenian government went 'its way.'

"For many years we have been in a dialogue with the Armenian side and proposed to solve the Karabakh issue in the following way.  Because Armenia controlled seven districts of Azerbaijan.

We said: let's move toward the normalization of relations," the Russian President said at a meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club, answering the question of political analyst Alexander Iskandaryan.

"There are two districts - Kelbajar and to the south, the corridor (the Lachin corridor - ed.). These are large districts. At some stage, we will agree with the Azerbaijani side. Give these five districts," Pashinyan urged.

He noted that people had already left those districts, and in fact, they were expelled from these territories, and there is 'no point' to keep these districts.

"That would be a good step for the normalization of the situation in the region as a whole. But the Armenian leadership went its own way. This has led to the situation that has developed so far," Putin added.
