The man who attacked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband Paul, 82, was in the United States illegally, according to the Washington Post.
According to the newspaper, David DePape is a Canadian citizen. Since he does not have a visa, he could face deportation after the investigation of the criminal case against him.
DePape pleaded not guilty and remains in custody.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) filed an immigration warrant for the detention of Canadian citizen David DePape at the San Francisco County Jail on November 1 after he was detained on October 28, according to the publication.
