The European Parliament approved new CO2 emission reduction targets for new cars and light commercial vehicles as part of the Fit for 55 package.

340 MEPs voted for the plan, 279 voted against it and 21 MEPs abstained.

The European Parliament's new plan paves the way for the EU's CO2 emissions target. Accordingly, new passenger cars and light commercial vehicles must become emission-free by 2035, meaning the goal is to reduce CO2 emissions by 100 percent compared to 2021. The intermediate goal by 2030 is to reduce emissions by 55% for new cars and 50% for light commercial vehicles, the European Parliament said.
