Tourists will now be able to access the Inca city of Machu Picchu in Peru again, the complex begins to operate from February 15, RIA Novosti reports citing the country's Ministry of Culture.

"It is announced that the sacred city of Machu Picchu will open from February 15 under the same conditions and with the same schedule," the report said.

The attraction was closed to the public on January 21 due to widespread social protests in the region and the country. At the time, more than 400 people (most of them foreign tourists) were stranded in the vicinity of Machu Picchu because unknown people dismantled the railroad tracks leading to the historical monument.

Protests have been taking place in Peru since mid-December. Protesters are demanding the resignation of the president, the congress and the holding of early presidential elections.

Machu Picchu is an ancient American fortress located in modern-day Peru and is often called the "lost city of the Incas." It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
