The Netherlands and Canada filed a lawsuit against Syria to the United Nations International Court of Justice on allegations of torture. This was announced by the International Court of Justice on Monday, writes European Pravda.

In their statement, Canada and the Netherlands claim that Syria has committed countless violations of international law since at least 2011 and ask for emergency measures to protect those at risk of torture.

The two states are seeking to hold the government of President Bashar al-Assad accountable for gross human rights violations and torture under the UN Convention against Torture, which Damascus ratified in 2004.

If the court finds that it has jurisdiction to hear the case, it will be the first international court to be able to make a legal opinion on the probable use of torture by Syria as a state.
