Volkswagen will temporarily cut manufacture of electric cars at its Emden plant due to falling demand, Die Zeit reports, citing the Nordwest-Zeitung newspaper.

Within two weeks, the company will reduce work shifts in the production of its ID.4 crossovers and ID.7 sedans.

Also, Volkswagen extended the duration of the corporate vacation from two weeks to three, and announced that about 300 of the 1,500 temporary employees of the Emden plant will be laid off as of August.

According to the chairman of the Volkswagen production board, Manfred Wolf, such measures are due to the decrease in demand, which is 30 percent less than expected.

But the manufacture timetable for Volkswagens with an internal combustion engine, such as the Passat, has not changed.
