The most important outcome of the debate on Armenian Genocide held in Knesset is the strong moral and educational message that has been voiced by the Israeli parliament, MK Zahava Gal-On told Armenian News-NEWS.am in an e-mail letter.

“I hope it will resonate with the public in Israel and set an example for our citizens, media and education system in confronting other atrocities that are happening or may take place in the future.

I hope that it will also negate the very cynical and opportunistic behavior by our current and past governments with respect to recognizing the Armenian Genocide,” said member of Knesset from Meretz Party.

Zahava Gal-On also said she is satisfied with the fact that the discussion took place, “which is an achievement we in Meretz attempted to realize for many years.”

“I was happy that the Speaker of the Knesset attended the discussion and supported its cause, and am also satisfied that representatives of the Armenian Action Committee in Israel were given the opportunity to speak and for the first time commemorate the Armenian Genocide openly in the Israeli Parliament,” she said.

Knesset’s committee on education, culture and sport held a discussion of the issues related to recognition of the 1915 Armenian Genocide on December 26.

The majority of attendees, including Speaker Reuven Rivlin, supported recognition of the Armenian Genocide.
