Speaking at the press conference in Brussels, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen affirmed alliance’s intension to admit Georgia to membership.

“We confirm that the agreements reached in Bucharest are in force and Georgia will become NATO member,” Rasmussen underlined, recalling recent Georgia-NATO commission meeting.

According to him, the fact that intensive work has been done by Georgian authorities and no efforts were spared during this time is promising.

Rasmussen informed that NATO will keep on supporting implementation of reforms in the country and maintaining its territorial integrity.

As for Ukraine’s membership, Secretary General said that country still has a long way and should execute extensive work in this direction.

Rasmussen also confirmed that alliance pledged to admit Ukraine and Georgia in Bucharest Summit (April, 2008), however he considers that states do not meet criteria for NATO membership.
