U.S. President Barack Obama intends to pressurize Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the course of Dec. 7 meeting in Washington. Obama will try to gain Turkey’s support on Iranian nuke program and Afghan issues, Bloomberg reports.

The source says that “Obama will probe Turkey’s willingness, as a member of the United Nations Security Council, to back new sanctions against Iran.”

“Erdogan’s government has been expanding trade ties with Iran, which supplies about 20 percent of Turkey’s natural gas,” the source reads.

The Bloomberg says that Erdogan’s visit to Washington, after Obama’s visit to Turkey eight months ago “comes as Turkey seeks to play a more prominent role in its neighborhood, trying to broker a resumption of Israeli-Syrian peace talks and improving ties with Iran.”
