No breakthrough furthering Armenia-Turkey reconciliation and border opening was reached in the course of U.S.-Turkey dialogue in the highest level, Prosperous Armenia faction secretary Aram Safaryan told NEWS.am.

“We did not see any progress contrary to all expectations and we realize why — the reason is Turkey and U.S. are strategic allies. Meanwhile, any issue touched upon by both leaders eventually should be directed towards stimulation of Armenia-Turkey relations,” said Safaryan. However, within next two months certain clarifications will be done, he forecasted, adding that at this stage no progress Armenia-Turkey relations can be achieved without efforts of great powers — U.S., Russia as well as EU.

“Presently, Armenia-Turkey relations are at stalemate, as everything is already said. If Turkey focuses attention on Karabakh issue further, Armenian political forces, including coalition will have to explain impossibility of unilateral concessions by Armenian side,” Safarayan stated.

There is nothing new in the fact that Erdogan conditioned Protocols’ ratification by Karabakh issue, MP underlined. The most significant is whether U.S., EU and Russia will be able to pressurize Ankara and make it change its stance on reconciliation process. “I think that at least this did not happen during Obama-Erdogan meeting. It is the most dramatic point,” emphasized Safaryan. Armenia does not lose anything as it did not have relations with Turkey so far. “We are frank in our desire to improve relations with Turkey, but if it is not ready yet to do so, it is up to Ankara,” MP concluded.
