No crucial events happened in 2009 in South Caucasian region in terms of the existing conflicts’ settlement, Iranian studies expert and Russian political analyst Karine Gevorgyan told NEWS.am.

According to the expert, on the whole the situation remains stable and no breakthrough was registered in the most problematic Karabakh conflict. As to Armenia, the country suffers stable regress, “In this context, nothing except for the regress, that leads country to uncertainty threatens Armenian or Russian authorities.”

Gevorgyan considers that in this regard Armenia is not the only country in the region being in this state. According to her, neighboring Georgia is in the same or even worse state. “The August 2008 events were unexpected for the Georgians,” the expert underlined, adding that since then local authorities keep citizens under total observation, controlling all contacts with Russia.

The political analyst considers the recent explosion of Glory Memorial in Kutaisi a crucial event. “It was a kind of message, though pretty odd. Lack of reaction to the incident causing death of a young woman and an 8-year old child speaks volumes. It clearly showed Georgia’s direction,” Gevorgyan concluded.
