“Under international law, if Armenia recognizes Nagorno-Karabakh independence, the whole negotiation process will change for better or worse,” Richard Giragosian, the Director of the Center for National and International Studies, told the journalists today. He also added: “Recognition of Karabakh independence by Yerevan will change the whole dynamics of the talks and we do not know yet for the better or the worse.”

According to him the actual challenge is there are few people in the Armenian Government with strategic thinking and mostly put their minds at tactical issues. “Some people demand Armenia to recognize Nagorno-Karabakh independence, but it is interesting that the Government do not provide the response to it yet,” Kirakosyan pointed out.

As to whether Abkhazia and South Ossetia’s independence recognition will favour the Nagorno-Karabakh status, Kirakosyan said: “I suppose these problems are not really closely related, as Karabakh has its history, made correct independent steps, than Abkhazians and Ossetians.

Meanwhile, despite Abkhazia and South Ossetia’s independence recognition by several countries, it is not sufficient to make such conclusions. I parallel more the Karabakh and Kosovo issues.”
