The number of drug addicts in Armenia is growing. Today, Head of Narcological Clinic of Armenia Petros Semerjyan said that as of January 1, 2009, there were 1141 drug addicts in Armenia (of which 12 women). However, it is merely official data – as only those applied to any narcological clinic were registered. According to Semerjyan, the real-life figure in the country greatly exceeds the reported, reaching 30.000 in Armenia, and 45.000 in Russia.

Nevertheless, Armenia ranked modestly compared to other countries in the region – as 45.000 drug addicts are officially registered in Georgia, and 25.000 — in Azerbaijan.

Semerjyan said the age of the addicts varies from 25 to 45, mainly Yerevan residents. Hemp or opium are the most preferred drugs in Armenia.
