“Diplomatic and political solutions to any conflict can be found, but so far I don’t predict serious military conflicts in the near future, except for one region – Afghanistan,” CSTO Secretary General Nikolai Bordyuzha stated in the interview with Tajik “Vecherniy Dushanbe” weekly.

According to him, most of former Soviet Republic leaders know firsthand of the situation in “hot spots” and “brewing” conflicts in different regions. “I think it is sufficient to make reasonable and correct decisions,” Bordyuzha noted.

“Iran and Afghanistan are the least stable regions in Eurasia, as the peril of military conflict inside and outside the states persists,” he outlined.

In this regard, Bordyuzha expressed hope that urgent issues like fighting against Afghan drug traffic and counter-terrorism can give incentives for the establishment of official ties and cooperation between CSTO and NATO.

“We hope that now, after the change of NATO leadership, Brussels will revise its attitude towards CSTO-NATO relations. As for Iran, it is one of the instability factors on the continent,” Bordyuzha emphasized.
