U.S. Congressmen are inclined in favor of approval of the Armenian Genocide resolution by the U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs, but numerous Turkish representatives are actively trying to prevent the approval, Eduard Sharmazanov, Secretary of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) told NEWS.am, referring to the RPA member Artak Zakaryan, who is a member of the Armenian delegation in Washington.

As regards the possibility of the Committee’s approving the resolution, Sharmazanov said that the United States de facto recognized the Armenian Genocide, as 42 of the 50 states condemned the crime committed by Ottoman Turkey. “Moreover, many of the presidential candidates, including Barack Obama, recognized and condemned the Armenian Genocide even before they were elected presidents,” he said. Sharmazanov pointed out that the Committee is most likely to approve the resolution.
