After the adoption of Armenian Genocide Resolution by U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs, President Barack Obama’s bid to enhance partnership with Turkey faced serious test, The Financial Times newspaper reports.
During his last visit to Turkey, Obama hailed U.S.-Turkey relationship as a “model partnership”, labeling Turkish political system as a model for much of the Islamic world, the source informs.
“U.S. policy acknowledges as a starting point that Ankara has growing influence in the Middle East, maintains NATO’s second biggest army and hosts important US military bases,” the source reads.
“U.S. is also urgently seeking Turkey’s support for sanctions on Iran, which Washington would like to be adopted by the United Nations Security Council,” the source says noting that Obama gave a pre-election promise to recognize Armenian Genocide and avoided it.
According to the source, the adopted H. Resolution 252 urges Obama to describe the killings on April 24, 1915 as genocide.
