YEREVAN. – Along the sidelines of the of the Inter-Parliamentary Union assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, Armenian National Assembly (NA) Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan on Sunday met with President Norbert Lammert of the German Bundestag (Parliament). 

The interlocutors reflected on Armenia-Germany relations and interparliamentary ties, and discussed the latest regional developments, informs the NA press service.  

First, Abrahamyan congratulated Lammert, in connection with the victory of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany and the Christian Social Union of Bavaria (CDU/CSU) coalition—which is led by Chancellor Angela Merkel—in the recent Bundestag elections.

He gave a high assessment to the current level of Armenian-German relations, and noted that Armenia is interested in expanding relations with Germany. The NA leader added that Armenia will continue to remain committed to European values and principles, and it is determined to deepen its institutional reforms.      

Hovik Abrahamyan stated that Armenia is guided by the precept of coordination of interests, and therefore it continues to expand relations with both its European partners and its strategic ally, Russia.

On his part, the Bundestag leader presented the current domestic political situation in Germany and the ratio of the Bundestag’s political forces after the  parliamentary elections in the country.       

Lammert underscored the development of Armenia-Germany relations, the deepening of interparliamentary partnership, and the strengthening of cooperation. 

The Bundestag chairman stressed that Germany is keen to develop relations with Armenia, and added that his country respects Armenia’s decision to join the Customs Union. 

He also highlighted the need to deepen Armenia-European Union (EU) relations, and stated that the more lastingly the democratic processes proceed in Armenia, the Armenia-EU relations will develop that much more dynamically.

At the end of the talk, Norbert Lammert invited Hovik Abrahamyan for an official visit to Germany.
