Ratification of a new arms reduction treaty will encounter difficulties in the U.S. Congress, reads the joint statement by Senators John McCain and John Kyl as of April 8.
It says that ratification is not possible without full modernization of U.S. nuclear arsenal. Numerous mentions of the U.S. anti-missile system in the treaty will also complicate the process.

According to the document, the provision enabling Russia to unilaterally withdraw from the treaty if it considers the development of a new anti-missile system jeopardizes its strategic nuclear forces, potentially limits U.S.’s possible steps towards the development of its own ABM defense, Regions.ru reports.

Yesterday, Russian and U.S. Presidents Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev signed a new Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty in Prague.
