The aim of the Subcommittee on Nagorno-Karabakh to be set up at the CE Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) is working out methods of parliamentary diplomacy, PACE President Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, who is on a visit to Azerbaijan, told the APA News Agency.

According to him, besides Armenian and Azerbaijani representatives the Subcommittee will include 11 MPs representing the OSCE Minsk Group member-states. The Subcommittee is going to discuss the ways of establishing a dialogue and resolving the conflict. The problem is clear and does not need discussing, so the Subcommittee will start discussing the ways of resolving the conflict, Çavuşoğlu said. The Subcommittee’s goal is to contribute to the settlement by means of parliamentary diplomacy, he said.

Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu also pointed out that the CE-approved resolution will constantly be on the Subcommittee’s agenda, as they reflect the essence of the problem.

The PACE President also voiced his opinion on the Armenian Genocide resolutions approved by different Parliaments. According to him, making historical decisions is not politicians’ business. Historical decisions must be made after historical studies have been conducted. Politicians are not good at history, Çavuşoğlu said. Some moments in the Armenian-Turkish relations need to be studied by historians, and politicians should not put the issue on the agenda, stated the PACE President. “This is my opinion as PACE President and as a human,” he aid.

At his April 14 press conference, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu stated his intention to chair the Subcommittee on Nagorno-Karabakh. It is standard practice when the PACE President chairs a subcommittee. The former chairman was PACE President, he said.
