A unique situation has developed in the region: Russia, the United States and Europe are unanimous over the Armenian-Turkish process – all of them want Ankara and Yerevan to normalize their relations and reopen the border, Director of the Institute of Caucasus, political scientist Alexander Iskandaryan told reporters on April 23.
According to him, the aforementioned geopolitical players are acting in different ways in the region. Specifically, the U.S. is exerting immediate pressure on Turkey, and Europe is acting as a “soft-liner,” laying emphasis on the humanitarian aspect. “Russia, in turn, remains interested in developing the Armenian-Turkish process. At present I do not see any reasons for Russia to change its position,” the expert said.
Since the major geopolitical players are interested in progress in the Armenian-Turkish process, Ankara will have to find a way out of the situation, Iskandaryan said.
