The Supreme Military Council of Turkey (Yüksek Askerî Şûra, YAŞ) held a meeting to present the military ranks of the new commanders of the Turkish armed forces to be in effect until 2014. The ranks were approved by Turkish President Abdullah Gul, reports the Sabah newspaper.

With the names of some servicemen involved in the Ergenekon case and a suspected criminal group in the country’s naval forces, the Council’s meeting can be called the most difficult one.

The meeting received the information that Ergenekon members planned the assassination of the Armenian Patriarch of Istanbul Mesrob Mutafyan, the head of the Armenian community in Sebastia, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and others.

The Council also addressed a plan of destroying the Justice and Development Party and assassinating Fethullah Gülen signed by Colonel Dursun Çiçek of the Turkish Naval Forces. The Council voted for dismissing three servicemen from the Turkish Armed Forces for their fundamentalist views.
