Recently, in addition to Washington, Moscow and Brussels, Turkey and Iran also started to show interest in Karabakh conflict settlement. Namely, Tehran initiated a number of formal and informal moves manifesting interest to the issue, Deputy Director of Strategic Culture foundation Andrei Areshev told NEWS.am.

However, acceleration of Karabakh process at the current stage would be the worst option, as the conflict is presently at stalemate due to various reasons – uncompromising stand of one party and long-term geopolitical plans of major regional actors. At that, the pressure on one of the conflicting parties, that in OSCE MG’s opinion for some reason is weak, will not bring the desired results – on the contrary, it will lead to conservation of the process. “Pressure on Armenian side for return of the territories will induce collapse if the move is not substantiated by certain guarantees. It will entail both violation of status quo in Karabakh conflict zone and aggravation of domestic situation in Armenia. This should be clearly realized in Armenia,” the expert said. Hence, beyond the traditional approaches common in the frames of OSCE MG, new ones should be considered as well. “But seeking of new approaches is complicated by world community’ fear that status quo might be violated. Unfortunately, Karabakh conflict is too complex to speak of win-win solution for all, in the midterm for sure,” Areshev concluded.
