EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Asհton made a proposal to abolish the posts of EU special representatives for the South Caucasus and Moldova. The mandates of Peter Semneby (South Caucasus) and Kalman Mizsei (Moldova) expire on August 31, 2010. The decision is yet to be discussed by EU member states.

Experts account for the proposal by the EU’s waning interest in the South Caucasus and Moldova. The EU has another nine special representatives in Sudan, Kosovo, Macedonia, Bosnia, Central Asia, Afghanistan, Africa’s Great Lakes and Middle East. Catherine Asհton proposed combining the European Commission’s decisions that are of major importance for the EU.
