“Up to date I have not thought of the impact exacerbation of Turkish-Israeli relations might have on the Armenian community in Turkey – the two have nothing in common,” Sargis Serobyan, Deputy Editor of the Agos newspaper, told NEWS.am, commenting of the recent crisis in Turkish-Israeli relations.
According to him, it does not have any impact on the Armenian community. “In this sense, nothing threatens our community,” he said. As regards the talks that the tension may cause active discussions of the issue of Armenian Genocide by the Israeli Parliament, Serobyan believes they are exaggerations. “I do not have so much foresight to say that such developments could promote progress in recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Israel,” he said.
As regards the Turkish government’s attitude to the local Jewish community amid the crisis and sentiments within Jewish circles, Serobyan said that the Jewish community in Turkey is one of the most isolated ones – even more isolated than the Greek community. It does not comment on Israeli troops’ actions. Serobyan pointed out that only one Jewish journalist made his comments. He was critical of Israel’s actions and called them an inhuman act.
