At today’s press conference, RA Chief of Police Alik Sargsyan reported an unprecedented rise in crime rate in the H1 of 2009 compared to the corresponding period last year – 6,849 against 3,898 crimes (71%). Major General Sargsyan also stated 84.7% crime detection against 75%. However, a lower percentage of crimes solving rate was registered.

Among the causes of higher number of crimes are the social conditions or economic crisis, registration of numerous minor crimes, an unprecedented rise in the number of economic and drug-related crimes. Major General Sargsyan does not see any problem in the recent crime rise. Rather he hopes that figures will be “better” next year.

It is noteworthy that a few days ago the RA Police reported information explaining the causes of the crime rise. According to the report, the political stability in the country enables the law-enforcement agencies to focus on their straight duties. Asked by NEWS.am why Major General Sargsyan did not point out this fact, the Chief of the RA Police said: “Neither the authorities nor the Opposition interferes with the work of the police.” As to whether they did in former time, General Sargsyan said: “Let the former ones tell about former times.”
