Establishment of Azerbaijani-Georgian confederation is unreal, ruling Republican Party MP Shirak Torosyan told NEWS.am. According to him, present political situation in the region and geographic location of the countries complicate its realization.

“The statement was made during joint press conference of Aliyev and Saakashvili within the framework of Azeri leader’s visit to Georgia. The Azerbaijani side’s response was restrained,” Torosyan said.

“Georgia hopes to form a unity that will be directed against Russia, that is indirectly against Armenia as well. It is to Azerbaijan’s advantage and Saakashvili will try to make use of it,” he added.

According to him, Georgia and Azerbaijan just can solve certain problems on confederative basis. Azerbaijan will not aggravate relations with Russia for Georgia’s sake, he noted.

“Each regional country is economically weak, but jointly the region can become a serious economic unity that will attract international interest,” Torosyan stated, adding that economic alliance is likely to be formed, but with Armenia’s participation. It might happen as soon as all regional conflicts are resolved, Republican Party member stressed.

“The countries fully realize they cannot develop their economies separately,” Torosyan concluded.

 As NEWS.am reported earlier, in the course of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Batumi in July, Georgian leader Mikheil Saakashvili said that Azerbaijani-Georgian confederation may be formed.
