The Special Investigation Department, RA Police, charged a policeman with abuse of office.

The Department is taking measures to identify the policemen that used violence against the citizens they were bringing to the police station. Specifically, on the morning of March 1, 2008, while bringing one citizen from Republic Square and two citizens from Mashtots Avenue to the police station, the policemen in question used violence against them.

The investigative agency identified the policeman that used violence against the citizen brought from Republic Square: he struck the citizen with a rubber club. The policeman is Gegham Harutyunyan, commander of a squad, the 2nd company, 1st battalion, 1st regiment of the State Police Field Service.

The investigative agency is searching for the citizens subjected to violence by the policeman.

To ensure a comprehensive and impartial investigation, the investigative agency asks all the witnesses to the events, victims of the illegal acts committed by the policemen and all those having relevant information to report to law-enforcers.

On March 1, policemen dispersed a rally that had been held for about ten days. On the March 1 evening, a police attack on the demonstrators claimed ten lives, leaving dozens injured. No policeman has been held responsible for using violence against or murdering demonstrators. About 100 active members and supporters of the Opposition were sentenced to imprisonment under illegal verdicts.
