Russian-Azerbaijani relations constitute a part of the Russia’s policy in the South Caucasus, MP from Republican Party of Armenia Artak Zakaryan told the reporters today.

According to him, it can be concluded from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s recent statement  that the presence of Russia in the region is conditioned by building and maintaining stability in the region, as Azerbaijan may violate it.

As to Russia’s commitments following the CSTO agreement, Zakaryan stressed Moscow will take sides with Armenia if it is needed. Commenting on the statement whether Russia will support Nagorno-Karabakh’s security, Zakaryan did not give a concrete answer. “The Republic of Armenia was and remains the security guarantor of the Karabakh nation, this is an indisputable fact in any developments, including the military showdown to the conflict, which is unlikely,” Zakaryan noted, adding Armenia will take any encroachment on Karabakh as a step against itself.
