“As a country suffering from the devastation of war and occupation, Azerbaijan strongly believes that faithful observance of the worldwide accepted norms and principles of international law concerning good neighborhood, friendly relations and cooperation among the States and the fulfillment in good faith of the obligations assumed by States are of the greatest importance for the maintenance of international peace and security,” Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said, addressing the UN General Assembly.

Calling the Karabakh conflict a confrontation between Armenia and Azerbaijan, he noted that it represents a major threat to international and regional peace and security.

Then, Aliyev once again repeated his tiresome rhetoric, blaming Armenia for the conflict. As it was expected the speech did not mention Azerbaijan’s military operations against the Karabakh people who decided to use their right to self-determination. “The UN Security Council has adopted four resolutions and expressed its full support to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and the inadmissibility of the use of force for the obtainment of the territories. It has also recognized that Nagorno-Karabakh is part of Azerbaijan and called for immediate, full and unconditional withdrawal of the occupying forces from all occupied territories of Azerbaijan. The UN General Assembly and other international organizations, including the OSCE, Council of Europe, European Parliament, Organization of the Islamic Conference, have adopted a similar position. Unfortunately, despite the consolidated position of the international community, Azerbaijani territories continue to remain under the occupation,” he stated.

The Azerbaijani President made clear forgery, saying that in 2005 the OSCE mission allegedly found evidence of the presence of settlers in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, though, in fact, it had found only several thousands of Armenian refugees from Azerbaijan who had suffered ethnic cleansings. 

The most cynical point in Aliyev’s speech was accusation against Armenia of destruction “of Azerbaijani cultural and historic monuments” in the territories controlled by the Armenian side. President Aliyev whose army has “heroically” destructed Armenian Khachkars (ancient Cross-Stones) in Old Julfa in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, allegedly accused Armenia of the attempts to “remove any signs of testifying their original Azerbaijani cultural and historic roots.”
