Meeting of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev with his U.S. counterpart Barack Obama on the margins of the UN General Assembly is compensation to Azerbaijan for not being invited to the world nuclear summit in Washington, Alexander Iskandaryn, Director of Caucasus Institute, told the reporters. He also noted that at the moment information about the New York meeting is not full.

The positive point of this meeting is discussion of the OSCE Minsk Group activities and statement regarding peaceful resolution of the Karabakh conflict, he stressed.

As to Aliyev’s statement, the expert considers it aroused no interest and was predictable. It was also predictable that Obama will touch upon releasing two jailed bloggers, thus showing U.S. real attitude towards domestic political situation in Azerbaijan.

Commenting on Iranian President’s speech, Iskandaryan pointed out that even in the context of Russia’s refusal to supply S-300 systems to Iran, Ahmadinejad did not speak against Europe and Russia but voiced accusations only against U.S. “It means Iran views U.S. as the only serious rival,” the political expert said.

Ahmadinejad’s speech indicated that all the attempts of Iranian and U.S. diplomats to agree have ended in a fiasco.
