Cases of violent death among young people constitute 0.5% in Armenia, says the European report “Preventing violence and knife crime among young people” by the World Health Organization (WHO). Armenia ranks the last among the 53 countries involved in the report.

At a meeting with journalists, Professor Hrant Avanesyan, Head of the General Psychology Department, Yerevan State University, said that the low figure is first of all accounted for by the fact of Armenia being a monogamous state, low crime rate among women and young people. On the other hand, education is still considered an influential factor.

“International NGOs play their role, and relevant measures are being taken,” Avanesyan said. He pointed out the results produced by the serious control over this population group. The professor also said fewer films advocating violence are now shown in Armenia. 

Armen Papyan, an official of the RA Ministry for Sport and Youth Affairs, said the Government is taking measures to prevent murders and other crimes among young people.
