In an interview with the Limes weekly (Italy) Turkish President Abdullah Gul addressed relations with Armenia. He made claims about confidential diplomatic processes.

The journalist asked the Turkish leader if the resolution of the Armenian Cause problem is a precondition for Turkey’s membership in the European Union (EU), as the relations have been frozen since “football diplomacy” was launched.

The Turkish leader pointed out that the Armenian Cause has nothing in common with Turkey’s membership in the EU.

Turkey is keeping track with the peace and cooperation policy in the region, which is important for settling regional problems. “Our work was aimed at establishing stability in the Caucasus,” Gul said. However, the Armenian Cause problem needs to be resolved, and it is time for confidential diplomacy.

As to what he means by confidential diplomacy, Gul said that it is decisive and secret diplomacy. At present, it is the only way of resolving the problem, Gul said.

NEWS.am reminds readers that the Armenian foreign office has repeatedly stated no talks with Turkey are currently under way.
