Verdict of International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Kosovo’s independence gave an answer to one important question, whether unilateral declaration of independence is considered as a violation of international law. The court gave a definite answer that it was not, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said at a press conference.

“Let’s have a look at the Karabakh peace process. Karabakh people were persuaded to live within Azerbaijan during Soviet period. However, Karabakh people could not bear it even during years of Stalin’s dictatorship and unilaterally self-determined, as soon as it was possible. It happened during collapse of the USSR. In response, Azerbaijan imposed war on Karabakh that was won by them with assistance of Armenia. Here is the difference between Kosovo and Nagorno-Karabakh. The difference is Karabakh won the war of its own, without NATO’s support and is patiently expecting its unilaterally proclaimed independence to be recognized by international community,” President Sargsyan said.

In this context, the Armenian President stressed that each conflict is specific and has its own solution, but the legal approaches should be the same.
