No crucial breakthrough in the Karabakh peace process should be expected. Resistance to resolution of the conflict in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Karabakh is stronger than external pressure, Alexander Iskandaryan, Director of the Caucasus Institute, told NEWS.am.

The expert considers that trilateral meeting is likely to be followed by a joint oral statement “but possibly (though not likely) there will be no statement at all.”

“Current Armenian-Azerbaijani relations are even more tensed than they usually are. Taking into account forthcoming Azerbaijani parliamentary elections, Russian president will hardly manage to see the sides keeping minimum diplomatic proprieties,” he stressed.  

Commenting on the forthcoming OSCE summit in Astana, Iskandaryan noted that no dramatic changes concerning conflict resolution should be expected as well.    

As to the bill on Karabakh proposed by the Heritage party, the expert deems it cannot be approved by the parliament under present distribution of political forces.
