Any radical changes can hardly be expected in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process before the OSCE Summit in Astana, Naira Zohrabyan, the Chairwoman of the Commission for European Integration and MP of the Prosperous Armenia Party told NEWS.am, commenting on Russian President Dmitry Medevedev’ statement on the results of his meeting with his Armenian and Azerbaijani counterparts, Serzh Sargsyan and Ilham Aliev, in Astrakhan, Oct. 27.

“From the very beginning it was clear that the meeting would not be a turning point. However, some ‘messages’ were expected,” she said. At the news conference following the meeting the Russian leader said numerous issues remained unsettled, which means no breakthrough should be expected.

“I do not think any serious progress will be made before the OSCE Summit in Astana. Nagorno-Karabakh’s status remains the cornerstone Armenia and Azerbaijan keep on holding diametrically opposite positions,” Zohrabyan said.

At best, one more declaration will be the result of the trilateral meeting, similar to the Meyendorff Declaration of November 2, 2008, which recorded a certain state in the negotiation process.

“I do not think there will be any serious document,” Zohrabyan said.

Zohranyan ruled out the possibility of any changes in Azerbaijan’s position or methods of dealing with the conflict. “If President Aliev has to date been holding cheap his own signature to the Meyendorff Declaration, which clearly says that neither side has the right to force or threat of force, he will not change his position within a couple of months,” Zohrabyan said.
