German Chancellor Angela Merkel is likely to speak with U.S. President Donald Trump about Russia and a situation in Ukraine on Saturday, Reuters reported quoting a source familiar with the matter.

The interlocutor could not confirm the information that Trump might want to speak with Merkel about a lifting of the U.S. sanctions imposed on Russia in response to its intervention in Ukraine.

At the same time the source of the Reuters made clear that if such a step were taken, then the EU would not necessarily follow Washington.
