A Turkish journalist was shocked by astronomical price for the house of Yeghishe Charents in the Turkish city of Kars.

Irem Koker, a journalist of the Hurriyet newspaper, participated in the meeting of Armenians and Turks organized by TESEV in Kars. Together with conference participants, she visited cultural and historical monuments of the city. There she discovered that destroyed house is nothing else but the house of a great Armenian writer Yeghishe Charents. Armenian participants were enthusiastically taking photos of the house. “I have never heard about Charents before but realized how important he is for Armenians. Charents was born in this house in 1897,” she noted. The journalist was shocked to know that the owner told the Deputy Culture Minister, who arrived to Turkey to the opening of Surb Kahch church, that the house is sold at 250,000 liras ($170, 000).

Earlier NEWS.am talked to Lilit Hakobvyan, Director of the Charents memorial flat in Yerevan, to clarify whether rumors are true. Lilit Hakobvyan said she could not confirm the rumors. “I know for certain that Turks will not purchase the house. However, under Turkish law, only a Turkish citizen can purchase the house,” she noted.

She also said that the Armenian side has not applied to the Armenian community in this connection. ‘The Armenian community in Turkey is supposed to do it itself,” she said.
