Armenian citizens trust neither Turkey as a state nor Turks. According to the public opinion poll conducted by Populus company ordered by European Friends of Armenia, 75% of residents approve President Sargsyan’s decision to freeze Armenian-Turkish process after Turkey failed to ratify the protocols.
Despite skeptical attitude towards Turkey and Turks, people consider that normalization of relations is advantageous. Overwhelming majority of respondents (78%) think that Armenia’s economy will gain much due to foreign trade, whereas majority of pollees consider that it will open greater opportunities for Armenia’s foreign policy (61%) and the open border will reconcile Armenia and Europe (63%).
However, a few are confident that Turkey will become a good prater for Armenia within the framework of regional cooperation and that recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Turkey is possible. Majority of pollees think that the open border will lead to trafficking and migration.
Poll was conducted in the territory of Armenia on October 15-18 among 1210 people in Yerevan and 10 regions.
