The U.S. will continue to be involved in the Karabakh peace process and maintain close contacts with Russia on the conflict resolution, the U. S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Gordon stated.
“Russia plays an active role in the Karabakh conflict resolution. The U.S. welcomes Russia’s role as a mediator in the talks is ready for close cooperation with it,” he stressed.
He did not agree that the United States seems passive on the background of intensification of Russia’s role as a mediator in the Karabakh peace process.
“The U.S. Secretary of State Clinton, who visited Armenia and Azerbaijan in July of this year, is constantly informed of this issue and is closely observing the situation. The United States will take an active part in negotiations due to the importance of the conflict settlement,” he stressed.
The U.S. official stressed that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was also among the issues discussed at the OSCE Summit in Astana. The diplomat gave a positive assessment to the joint statement of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs and the conflicting parties on the conflict resolution.
Gordon also expressed U.S. concern over cases of violation of ceasefire on the frontline.
