Though the Armenian authorities considered the Heritage-initiated bill on recognition of Karabakh’s independence ill-timed, it was the very time to make the move, as it was in the 90s, 2007 and 2010,” MP from “Heritage” parliamentary faction Larisa Alaverdyan told the reporters on Wednesday.

According to her, the political situation in 1992-94 in the country was too expedient for Armenia to recognize Karabakh, particularly the year of 1994, when Bishkek Protocol was signed.

“The geopolitical situation was favorable in 2007 too, when Heritage’s proposals for Karabakh’s recognition coincided with recognition of Kosovo’s independence. However, Armenian media and authorities labeled this step as narrow party interests and the initiative was not developed,” Alaverdyan stressed. The parliamentarian emphasized the authorities are inclined to recognize Karabakh, when Azerbaijan resorts to provocation, which is unacceptable.

According to her, if Armenia has statehood, it should not be considered weak to move forward with the process, despite its political system being imperfect.

“Though there are major shortcomings in the internal political issues, Armenia is pursuing inadmissible economic policy, but we have many advantages as well,” the MP stressed referring to the country’s geopolitical position and Armenian people’s mentality to live peacefully.
