The USA will not prevent Israel from attacking Iran, stated US Vice-President Joe Biden. He called this decision Israel’s “sovereign right”.

“Israel can determine for itself as a sovereign nation what is in its best interest,” Biden said. “If the Netanyahu government decides to take a course of action different than the one being pursued now, that is their sovereign right to do that. That is not our choice,” he said in an interview with the ABC News program.

However, the USA-claimed inability to prevent Israel fom attacking Iran is far from being true. To launch a strike on Iran, Israeli aircraft have to fly either across Turkey, which is a NATO member, or across Iraq, which is under the US control as well. Thus, an air strike on Iran is unlikely without the USA’s prior consent. In their turn, American mlilitary experts point out that, even with the most favorable state of affairs, an attack Iran’s nuclear facilities will only throw the country a couple of years back, but not force it into giving up its plans.

Earlier, in his interview with CBS, Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said a U.S. strike on Iran would be “very destabilizing,” with unpredictable consequences for the entire region.

The Israeli Government has so far been relying on diplomacy as a major means of “fighting” against Iran’s nuclear program, with a military strike considered an extreme measure. However, the Barack Obama administration has given the go-ahead to resolve the problem despite the new US President’s repeated attempts to meet with the Tehran government over its suspected weapons program.

Since 2005, when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad came to power, Israel has viewed Iran as a great threat to its security. The reason is that Ahmadinejad has repeatedly stated its intention to wipe Israel off the map and called the Jewish Holocaust a “myth.”
