RA Police Department arraigned Armenian National Congress (ANC) oppositionist Tigran Arakelyan, that earlier suffered from attack to ANC members distributing leaflets for rally on July 2, 2009. Arakelyan is arraigned for RA Criminal Code article 258, part 3 (hooliganism), he is charged for beating up the policemen of “Kentron” Police Department – Erik Poghosyan.

The lawyer of Arakelyan, Givi Hovhannisyan informed NEWS.am, that his client is presently in detention centre, and was called for the interrogation to “Kentron” Police department on July 5, at 1 P.M. as a witness. Further, during the confrontation with aggrieved Erik Poghosyan, the latter said that was beaten up by Tigran Arakelyan.

At that Poghosyan is the witness of March 1-2 events, and testified against the “Hanrapetutyun” (Republic party) Political Commission member Smbat Ayvazyan.
During the confrontation, Arakelyan stated that did not beat up policemen, moreover, they tried to beat up himself. “The policemen attacked us, tried to take away our leaflets, speaker, and now try to put their blame on us.” Evidently, Tigran Arakelyan is detained illegally. The oppositionists were informing people about the rally, when were attacked and beaten up by police, and all that happened due to political reasons," Givi Hovhannisyan outlined.

Recalling, that police message as of July 1, 2009 read, that Erik Poghosyan was taken to “Grigor Lusavorich” hospital bashed up and unconscious. Arakelyan’s lawyer also emphasized, that yesterday on the interrogation his client was head banded, but with no violence marks on the face and body. In the course of interrogation, he was not violated either. On July 5, police interrogated 16-year old Sahak Muradyan, beaten up on July 1, 2009 and took from him cognizance not to leave. The underage Gerbert Gevorgyan, beaten up same day, is to be interrogated today.
