Today, September 21, Armenia celebrates 18th anniversary of independence. Eighteen years ago almost 99% of RA citizens voted for independence in the national referendum. Two days later, Supreme Soviet of Armenian SSR declared Armenia an independent state. The first Presidential elections were held October 16, 1991. Levon Ter-Petrosyan was popularly elected as the first President by 83% of votes.
