15 member-states of UN Security Council unanimously adopted Sept. 24 the resolution on stopping the spread of nuclear weapons. It outlaws nuclear tests and encourages global non-proliferation, AFP informs.

The Security Council summit chaired by U.S. Presiden Barack Obama took place in the UN Head Office in New York. Leaders of five original powers (United States, Russia, Britain, France, China) as well as ten tempopary members of the organization participated in the summit.

It was emphasized that the Security Council would deal with cases of violation of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT), the 1968 accord seeking to limit nuclear weapons possession and expressed concern over current “major challenges” to the NPT, meaning North Korean and Iranian nuclear programs. The resolution called on all states to accede to the NPT.

RF President Dmitry Medvedev – heading Russian delegation at the UN General Assembly, declared that Russia is ready to reduce thrice the number of its strategic arms. He said Moscow maintains talks with Washington on the issue. “This issue is on the table of negotiations and we discuss it with our U.S. partners,” Medvedev said. According to him, Russia is ready to cooperate with U.S. on “challenges of missile proliferation”. He expressed hope that “all other countries concerned will join them.”

“We harbor no illusions about the difficulty of bringing about a world without nuclear weapons,” Obama said, CNN Political Ticker informs.
