“I believe the Armenian-Turkish border will be opened by October, 2009”, stated Stepan Safaryan,MP and “Heritage” opposition party member. “I suppose Serzh Sargsyan will be on the return football match passing the open border,” he said.

“But I cannot precisely forecast that Armenian-Turkish negotiations will continue to develop and the border will still be open for a long time,” Safaryan said. Instead, he believes it won’t last long, as Serzh Sargsyan has to keep his promise and in case of closed border will not be on the match.

Besides, the MP continues, the western countries’ politics, as well as the meeting of Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev, have greatly influenced the negotiation process on border opening. “Better late than never,” Stepan Safaryan commenting on RA Presidents’ yesterday statement: “We strive to eliminate the borders in Europe and establish relations with Turkey without preconditions. But we will not allow Turkey to delude the international community via negotiation process.”

Safaryan added, that Serzh Sargsyan had to start new negotiation process long ago and exceed the frames of the “circle” established by the second RA President Robert Kocharyan and former RA Foreign Minister Vardan Oskanyan during the secret talks with Turkey in 2007.
