U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan Matthew Bryza commented on plans to open airport in Nagorno-Karabakh and Baku’s aggressive response to the initiative. The American diplomat considers shooting down civil aircrafts flying to Karabakh is unacceptable, 1news.az reports.

Bryza expressed content with Azerbaijan’s intention to take up another stance and aspiration to protect its rights in the International Civil Aviation Organization. The diplomat noted that U.S. stands for seeking a solution through negotiations.

Presently Baku- Nakhchivan flight is carried out through Armenia’s airspace and it is acceptable, he added.

Stepanakert’s airport will start its operation from May 9, 2011. Azerbaijan has recently threatened to shoot down aircrafts flying to Nagorno-Karabakh.

On March 21, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) handed Armenian General Department of Civil Aviation a letter from head of the Azerbaijani aviation department which says Baku is ready to crash planes flying to Karabakh if authorities open Stepanakert airport.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said he intends to be the first passenger of the first flight. Talking to the jounrlists on March 31 people of Nagorno-Karabakh has a right to use air transport. Sargsyan noted Armenia and NKR should spare no effort to reach accord on the issue with international agencies.
