October8, 2009 two powerful tremors hit Vanuatu archipelago. The first 7.8 magnitude quake was followed by one of 7.1 about an hour later, BBC reports. According to the US Geological Survey the first quake’s epicenter was 294 kilometers north-west of the Santo Island. The residents in Vanuatu, Tuvalu and New Caledonia Islands were evacuated from the coastal areas.

Tsunami warning was issued in the region but was later cancelled.
