RA President Serzh Sargsyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev held a meeting in Chisinau late on October 8. The Nagorno-Karabakh peace process was in focus. The meeting took place in the U.S. Embassy in Moldova. At a press conference Yuri Merzlyakov, Russian Co-Chairman of OSCE MG, said the Presidents’ meeting was “serious and constructive”.

According to Merzlyakov, on the whole, the Armenian and Azerbaijani leaders, “do not have too many issues they lack mutual understanding on.” He also pointed out that the Presidents discussed the issues that remained open until now.

Robert Bradtke, U.S. Co-Chairman of OSCE MG, stated the Presidents seriously discussed the problem. Both sides accepted specific proposals for the conflict resolution, which are to be incorporated in the draft documents.

Bradtke underlined that one of the key achievements of the Chisinau summit meeting was the Presidents’ arrangement to hold one more meeting shortly. According to U.S. Chairman, Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan pointed out “a positive dynamics in the talks.” The Presidents discussed the Madrid document in detail and requested OSCE MG Co-Chairmen to add the recommendations to the document.

Bradtke stated that the main provisions of the document are on non-use of force, the right to self-determination and territorial integrity. He said the Presidents agreed on them.

The summit meeting in Chisinau lasted three hours and a half instead of the planned two hours. The negotiations lwere later continued by RA Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan and his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov.

A trilateral meeting with RF President Dmitry Medvedev’s participation is to be held October 9.
